A few years ago, I moved into a 400 square foot apartment. One room for sleeping, living, working, and eating — and one very big question I couldn’t answer: what furniture do I actually buy?
Every piece felt like a risk. Too big, and the room would shrink around it. Too small, and the apartment would feel like a waiting room instead of a home. I spent months second-guessing — measuring, returning, rearranging — trying to make one small room feel bigger while still feeling like mine.
The turning point wasn’t a bigger apartment. It was a change of mind: I stopped trying to fit a regular home into a small space, and started choosing furniture for the space — pieces scaled to the room, pieces that did two jobs, pieces that let the light through. I began decorating it like the small apartment it was, instead of apologizing for what it wasn’t. The room didn’t get bigger. It got calmer. And somewhere along the way, it started to feel truly like home.
That’s what “soulful” means to me: a home that feels like an exhale. Not more things — the right things, placed with care.
